The City of Denning will receive federal assistance to build a new community center which will also serve as a tornado shelter. The Denning City Hall, Water Department and several homes in the city were destroyed by a deadly tornado in May 2011.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Office of Rural Development approved a $35,000 grant and an $182,000 loan for the project, according to a news release from U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman.? The new community center will be a 1,600 square foot building that will also serve as a tornado shelter for over 150 people.?
It will be complete with a fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms with showers and a backup generator to provide power, according to the release.
