The University of Michigan is behind a new smart phone app that could change the timeline of skin cancer detection. The application, available for the iPhone and iPad through iTunes, provides easy to follow, step-by-step instructions that will direct users through skin self-examinations.
Referred to as UMSkinCheck, the app will even send automatic reminders for follow up exams. Images stored within the app will allow users to make direct comparisons on how spots on the skin have changed over specified periods of time.
For patients at risk, photo examinations are generally highly recommended by dermatologists. Yet, the costs associated with the professional photography can be quite extensive and that cost can deter those in greatest need.
More than two million people in this country are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Of those, approximately fifty thousand will receive a diagnosis of melanoma, which is a very severe type. When caught early, however, survival rates are excellent for patients with melanoma.
With this application, there is no longer reason for patients to avoid photographic examinations. The app provides all necessary instruction, so the user can get all of the appropriate angles.
Twenty-three photos will be taken, in total, to capture the entire body ? head-to-toe. The patient can then document changes ? such as new moles, changes in size, shape or color, and more.
The professionals recommend that anyone with fair- and easily burned skin, or a family history of skin cancer consider this application or regular examinations in a medical setting.
